6-9thC Chinese Bronze Bodhisattva of Compassion from the Tang Dynasty. Would have originally had an elaborate back plate and base, and the open back would have not have been visible, as it would have been up against the back plate. I have seen very similar complete examples in museums and books. This piece is of high quality, has a great face, finesse in the sculpting, and casting that is only found in the high-quality examples. For example--note the complexity of the ribbons and robe, and expressiveness and sensitivity of the face. Piece is 4.5 inches tall, on stand total height is 5.5 inches tall. Beauty, elegant.
