7th/9thC solid-cast bronze Prakhon Chai Bodhisattva of Compassion. In the early 1960's, a cache of over four-hundred bronze buddhas and bodhisattvas were discovered in the east of Thailand after strong rains caused an underground chamber to collapse. They ranged in age over a 200 year period, as well as in quality. The pieces ranged from quite small to over a meter tall. Most of the examples ended up in museums or important private collections. This piece is likely from that original cache as it has the distinctive sash found around the waist of that grouping. Note the finesse in the stance--look at it from any angle, and you will see grace, balance, and beauty. Stands 7 inches tall and 8 3/8 inches tall including base.
