Large Antique Korean Bodhisattva of Compassion (Kannon, or Korean equivalent of Quanyin). Looks to be contemporary with Early Ming, though unsure how to date precisely. Beautiful fragrance of camphor wood still comes through strongly. Looks to be repainted or freshened many times. Possible repairs to the arms, with one loose(probably loose a very long time). Some shortening of fingers, but otherwise, appears original and complete. Very skillful use of asymmetry in the overall composition. The subtle differences in the two sides of the headdress, ribbons, and jewelry are balanced perfectly by the very unusual Mudra, or hand position. Large piece at 22 and 7/8 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 10 and 1/2 inches deep. Big presence- fills a room.
