Large, finely cast Cambodian or Thai bronze Shiva- from the 14th century or possibly a few centuries later, as there is something about him reminiscent of the Sukhothai Period in Thailand (which produced its Hindu bronzes related to this piece). Traces of original gilding remain - significant amounts are on the top of the hat. A large and striking example. It sits 11.5", which is quite large for this type of bronze- especially in sitting form. With his penetrating gaze, articulated beard, and very distinct look, he is a commanding figure like a few others. Holds a conch shell or wish-granting jewel or other objects in the right hand. The height on the custom base is 12 5/8 inches, One of the most visually interesting Khmer pieces I have offered. Not inexpensive, but you are unlikely to ever encounter another of this size of this quality in this condition.
