Large and fierce bronze 19thC Mongolian protective deity. Both figure and horse with powerfully expressive facial expressions, rearing up to scare away the things that get in our way of seeing clearly. This is one of the most popular and beloved fierce deities in Mongolia- she (yes, this is a she) is typically shown (as here) sitting on a human skin atop her horse walking through a sea of blood. Extremely large at 15 3/8" tall (at its highest point - fingertip) on its attached base. At the base measures 9.25" wide x 4.5" deep, this may be the largest sculpture of this figure I have ever seen in person. Typically the bronzes of this type are 4 to 6 inches tall, with the large ones being 7 or 8 inches tall. At over 15 inches tall, and made of a heavy bronze or bronze-like alloy (as opposed to a lighter alloy or repousse as are many large Mongolian statues sculpted), this is a true temple size piece. Significant wear from ritual use, but no damage or loss (even the head hanging on a loop around the horse's neck is still in place). Quite rare.
