Second half of 6thC Korean Masterpiece. Very closely related to Korean National Treasure #330, also known as "Kunusu-ri Bodhisattva" 4 1/2 inches in height. A full page photo of this piece is shown on page 63 in The Handbook of Korean Art, Buddhist Sculpture, by Yetyong Publishing in 2002, by Pak and Whitfield. My piece is actually in better condition as you will see when you compare the two pieces side by side. It came out of the estate of a Southern Florida gentleman- as with the other early Korean pieces I have gotten in the past few years. It was obtained during/shortly after the Korean War when U.S. soldiers were living in Korea, and many long held family treasures were sold to GI's for small amounts of money - sometimes for survival, sometimes for cigarettes. Most of these pieces have sat in drawers as mementoes of those wartime and post-wartime years for 60 years and are now coming onto the market as these men and women downsize, move to nursing homes, or pass away. Typically, the pieces are 18/19thC, and occasionally they are much earlier, Every once in a great while they turn out to be something absolutely fantastic, as in this case.
