Delightful pair of 19thC Mandalay monks carved out of a wonderful brown stone (now almost black). These are truly one of a kind- in 20 years I’ve not seen another pair anything like them (nor has anyone else who I’ve shown them to). The carving is done in a skillful folk style. They have incredible personality. They are in great condition, with no damage or losses. They are mounted in bases are of a terracotta-like substance which look to be original to the original time of creation. I also have two sitting fat bellied fellows of the similar stone which look to have been done by the same carver in the same time and place, and that came together with these two. They will be listed shortly. These two standing monks are fairly large- the taller one is 9 and 1/3 inches tall and the shorter one is 9 inches tall. Beautifully carved, sculpted and finished- this pair of unique stone statues are truly one of a kind. I had thought about offering them individually, as the price point would make them much easier to sell on the internet, but after spending well over a 100 years together, I would never separate these two companions. I also believe that they are far more valuable as a pair.
