15thC Sukothai head-unique, powerful and strongly sculpted. This is Thai sculpture at its best. Large at close to 7 inches including the back of the shoulder head and finial (and 8.5 inches tall with the modern base). The untouched patina is fabulous, with an underlying “jade green” patina which has patches of blue. This is overlaid with original gilding and red polychrome on the lips which looks either original or very early. The color in the photo is a little more intense than that of the actual Buddha, and the patina is a bit more greener than bluer. There is something a little “stronger” and masculine about the face than there is in most Sukothai Buddha faces, which tend to be androgynous. This is accomplished without losing any of the grace and flow for which this type of Buddha is so famous. It is unlike any other Buddha head of this type I have seen.
