18/19th century Malachite Buddha or Bodhisattva on Shrine. Carvings of this type in malachite are extremely rare. The examples of high-quality that use the patterns in the malachite to an optimal level are even scarcer. Much of the reason for this is because of the rarity of fine pieces of malachite. At least as much of an issue is the difficulty in carving it. As you can see with this example, it can crack in layers, even when great care is taken. There is no way to know for sure whether the damage/losses on this piece happened during manufacture or after, but they take away Little from the beauty of the face and from old custom base. Probably probably from Tibet, possibly from China or from some other nearby Himalayan country.
