(Kamakura?)Japanese Buddhist Celestial Figure made out of lacquer. Probably originally flanked one side of the head of a very large Buddha in a temple. Size is huge at approximately 28 inches tall, 19 inches wide and 8 inches deep. Appears extremely old, with remains of original black lacquer. Probably over 500 years old. Possibly Kamakura period. It probably avoided damage because it was in a high place in a temple for almost all its life. Note the compelling (Kamakura) face. Note: I had a closely related pair of these that were made of the same material. They were smaller and possibly a little bit later and not quite of the same very high quality but were otherwise remarkably similar. You can see them in the sold section of my website as item 7457.
