Sukothai 15thC-18thC Bronze Buddha. Large at 16.25" total height.- 10lbs. Base cast separately. Beauty! This very special face is very pleasing to look at. It seems to look right back at you. It's hard to find good quality Thai Buddha with so much personality and such a good sense of humor. It's a personal favorite. Larger than the 16.25 " suggests due to the width and the stout shape of the Buddha's body along with the impressive width of the base. At first, I thought it was 18/19 century, but after studying it closely and comparing it to closely related examples, I now believe it might be earlier. The 18/19 century ones are not as animated, are not cast in the same way, not smooth everywhere except on the inside edges of the base where fingers normally don’t go, etc.. The clay core in the underside of the period pieces if it is not removed typically has a very specific look to it, which is quite different than the later examples. I have more than 1700 Buddhist objects in my home and yet this is one of the four or five out of all of them that I am drawn to on a daily basis to look at and spend time with due to its charisma and spiritual energy. This is the highest Compliment I can pay to a Buddha.
