Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
Masterpiece!- Pre-10th C "Buddha as a Prince" from north of India in the Himalayan Hills and likely dating from between the 5th and 10th centuries, likely from a small kingdom that has disappeared into time. As with Gandhara Sculpture, it is influenced by the West. It is not from Gandara; however-it is more detailed, more animated, and, to my eyes, more advanced than the Bronze sculptors in Ganadara were at the same time. Note the INCREDIBLE quality and detail- Look closely at the TINY, extremely early Ganesh figures on base- they are remarkable, as are the equally diminutive rams, Urns, and other decorative elements.
There is some corrosion and minor loss due to extreme age (as seen in photos).
The figure has begun to "sink into the base due to the soft silver alloy used to cast this piece combined with the effects of 1000+ years of gravity pulling the sculpture down. I recently had a base made for his photos (base lift), and one part of the base makes the figure stand vertically. No one I've shown him to has even seen another like him. From an estate collection. ( 4.5"H x 2.5"W x 2.5"D ) - 225g. Base: ( 2"H x 4"W ) - 1.60lbs.
