Country Group: South and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam)
6th–7th Century Thailand/Laos/Cambodia/Burma Mon-style standing bronze Buddha. Extremely rare to find in such a large size—the original full figure would have stood over 18 inches tall, which is enormous for this very early period. This is likely one of the largest early Southeast Asian bronze Buddhas remaining in private hands. The face is wonderfully expressive, and the sculpture retains a strong, ancient burial patina.
The piece likely originates from the region now comprising Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, or Burma—made long before modern national borders existed. Solid cast and heavy for its size, this represents one of the earliest types of Southeast Asian bronze sculpture. In my personal collection for 30 years, purchased in the 1990s from an advanced collection of early SE Asian bronzes. Starting at less than I originally paid for it 35 years ago.
