"A large and weighty Korean bronze (or brass) Bodhisattva, dating to the 18th Century or earlier. The figure retains distinct traces of original gilding along with areas of deep red lacquer, both indicative of age and ritual use. This is a finely cast, substantial example, notable for its refined modeling, balanced proportions, and the dignified serenity of its expression.

The piece is closely comparable to the example sold at Christie’s Amsterdam on June 16, 1992 (lot 89, p. 32)—a work dated to the 18th century or earlier with a pre-auction estimate of 2,500 Dutch guilders over thirty-five years ago. This present Bodhisattva is slightly larger and of superior craftsmanship, making it an especially rare and desirable variant within the type. Its scale, weight, and presence are immediately striking; it carries the aura of an object that was both valued and venerated. In over three decades of collecting, I have not encountered another example of this exact form aside from the Christie’s piece—underscoring its scarcity.
