Bid is for TWO items plus custom made bases: Extremely rare, possibly unique PAIR of very early Burmese Mon style Buddhas on matching custom bases. Hard to date precisely due to the lack of comparable examples in reference books, this pair is approaching 1,000 years old- contemporary with the early Pagan Empire, which was taking place in another part of Burma in what was, at that time, a different kingdom. They are possibly earlier. To find one of this type, in this good size, in this complete condition, with such expressive faces, would be quite an achievement. To find a matched pair that have been together for a millennia is miraculous. They were almost surely buried/locked away in a stupa or other protected chamber most of that time. Remains of original gilding evident in small patches. These have been part of my personal collection for 25+ years. Purchased from a 3 generation family collection of early SE Asian Bronze sculpture. A (7"H x 5"W x 3"D) - 2.16lbs // Base: (1.25"H x 6"W) - 500g. // B (7.25"H x 4.75"W x 3"D) - 2.21g // Base: (1.25"H x 6"W) - 505g.
