One of the finest Buddhas I have owned in three decades and among the most memorable of the many thousands that have passed through my hands. For years, I believed it to be a late Pyu-period figure with strong Pagan influence; however, after receiving an Oxford TL test result indicating an age of up to 800 years, I reassessed the attribution. I now believe it most likely originates from a 12th Century tribal group in Burma, influenced by several major artistic centers of the time, including Pagan, Mon, and late Pyu.

The result is this truly unique Buddha—a piece for which I have never seen a comparable example. The Oxford TL report (attached) supports a date contemporary with late Pagan, though slightly later than the Pyu period. Its distinctive green surface is entirely accurate to the photographs, and it is exceptionally large for its type. Several seasoned experts in Burmese sculpture, each with decades of study, have remarked on its extraordinary size, color, and individuality, noting they have never encountered another quite like it.
