15th–18th Century Sri Lankan Divided Kingdom Period Standing Bronze Buddha. The surface has a beautiful, soft glow, and the casting quality is notably high. Figures from this period in large, refined form are quite rare; most available examples are the later Kandy style, recognizable by their rounder faces and the distinctive rippled robes. By contrast, early Divided Kingdom Buddhas of this size and quality are seldom seen—most surviving examples are only a few inches tall and far more provincial in execution.
This piece is exceptionally heavy for its size and displays a warmth and personality not often found in Lankan bronzes, which can sometimes appear rigid or remote. As I move toward retirement, I am offering a number of my most cherished pieces. They are not inexpensive, but each is special, authentic, and genuinely uncommon—the sort of examples that rarely reappear on the market.
