Country Group:
15/16thC or earlier Northern Thai four-sided Crystal Finial. It was well carved in an early style.( 3.75"H x 3.25"D ) - 580g. // Base: ( 5"W x 1.5"H ) - 360g. I originally purchased it 25 years ago from a collector who specialized in SE Asian Crystal Carvings from this period. He owed two complete examples and one broken one. He had been told there were originally 4 of them. He said this was the best of the three he had seen with his own eyes. It is a very rare intact excavated (with gov't approval in the 1960's) l temple piece. Note that the crystal is quite clear , though it does have a few inclusions. As with most of the carvings of this type, I have seen through the years, the carving is simple, and is done with straight lines (it was difficult if not impossible for them to accurately and cleanly carve curves with the tools they had available in the early years). They managed to deconstruct the Buddha images into simple animated, sensitive Buddhas . The modern emulations do not look the same.. There are relatively few crystal Buddhas from Southeast Asia from these early years, and they are highly sought after by collectors. There are far fewer crystal Buddhas that were part of the tops of Stupa’s or other architectural forms that have survived. I’ve only seen a small handful in 35 years.
