Very fine Japanese monk carved of a hard wood. As sensitively carved as any sculpture you will come across. The face ,on this fellow is one of my favorites out of all the images in my collection- the feeling he generates is one of deep serenity and compassion. The quality of the carving is that of a master carver. In good condition. The only loss is to the meditation beads, and to the lacquer, gilding, and polychrome which once covered the entire piece (traces remain). I personally love him in his present state. He looks to be Edo, although I do not know how to date this kind of piece with accuracy. He is quite old for sure. He is large at 15 inches tall and 7 inches wide at the base.
