Solid cast 9-11thC Burmese Bronze Buddhist Female Devotee in bronze in a very early method (look at the underside with the remnants of the thick solid rod), this piece is extremely large for its type. The only other examples I've seen are a fraction of its size. One feature that is special to this styleis the pattern on the cloth of the wrap she is wearing. I’ve seen this twice before, both on early Burmese pieces that were described as being Mon or possibly Sri Vajaya. Another person who collected extensively in this area believed that these pieces are early Pagan. And either case, all of these possibilities would put this piece between the ninth and 11th century, perhaps a little later. . The smile is classic Pagan type.. the eyes look similar to the later Ava and Shan bronze Buddhas of the 15th to 20th centuries, but I believe this is much earlier. Much of the rest of it is hard to know for sure, and the style and method of construction may have been influenced by other early cultures. Warrants further research. RARE and heavy for its size. ( 6"H x 2.25"W x 3.5"D ) - 4.5lbs. Base (5"W x 1"H ) - 130g.. Very Special.
