Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
Rare 18th Century Tibetan Buddha or Bodhisattva. Measures 5.25" tall (not including custom base). The sculpting is highly distinctive, especially in the deliberately asymmetrical crown and robe treatment. At first glance, the quality of the casting suggests a Tibetan or Nepalese origin, but closer study of the facial features and robe style reveals a character entirely its own.
It may originate from a small kingdom or autonomous region with its own localized bronze-casting tradition—one that produced works differing subtly but significantly from the major Himalayan centers. What is certain is that I have never encountered another example quite like it. The figure displays exceptionally crisp casting and fine finishing, with a high level of workmanship throughout. Condition is excellent, with a beautiful, matured patina that enhances its presence.
