122/13thC Song Dynasty Chinese Terracotta Buddha in the form of an Architectural wall piece. These are sometimes referred to as bricks, though they are much larger and finer than any bricks you will ever see. There are different forms of them known in China throughout a long period of history. They adorned temple structures and other religious buildings and complexes. This is a particularly fine example from the Song Dynasty. There are very minor chips on the non-Budddha parts of the brick, but the actual Buddha is near perfect. It has as much finesse and expressiveness as I’ve seen in one of this type of architectural pieces. The figure is a forearmed Bodhisattva with a delightful round face and bulbous eyes-both signature features of Chinese Buddhas and bodhisattvas from this period. 11"H x 11"W x 1.75"D ) - 10.45lbs. A special piece.
