15/16thC northern Thai bronze Buddha. Probably from the ancient Kingdom of Fang. Has a strong Laos influence. Note the very fine and intricate finial on-top of the head . There is a massive example of this type in the Chiang Sen museum that was found in the middle of the Mekong river. It is superbly cast and finished. It is missing its base and the lower part of it legs as the base was removed long ago, probably during the time that bronze was scarce (such as a time of war). It was not uncommon in Thailand to remove the bases of high-quality Buddhas and to recycle them into making new Buddha statues. They seemed to only use the best Buddha statues to do this, and this seems to be exclusively a practice of Thailand.( 8"H x 5"W x 3"D ) - 2.25lbs / Base: ( 5.75" W x 1.5"H ) . This Buddha would sit a good 12 inches tall if it had its original base. This is quite large for this type in this exceptional quality as they are usually 5 to 7 1/2 inches tall, including the bases. I’ve encountered very few like this in more than 35 years of searching..
