Country Group:
Very early and rare Korean bronze Buddha. Based on the open-back construction, the casting method, the sculptural style, the patina, and the overall feel, this figure is almost certainly 10th century or earlier. I initially considered the possibility of a Chinese origin, but after comparing it to related early Korean and Chinese Buddhist works, I believe it to be Korean. The surface shows an even, jade-green early patina, consistent with long burial and great age. A very special offering and an unusually early example of Korean Buddhist bronze sculpture.
