Extremely early Burmese bronze Buddha from the earliest period of Burmese Buddhism. It is Mon style from the 6 to 9thC based on related pieces I have seen over the years, (possibly an early variant of Burmese Buddha.) I've only ever seen 4 of this type in 35 years until just recently when I came across six closely related bronze examples which appeared to have been excavated together . The other 4 were excavated at the same time in the 1970's in central Burma, and I still have them listed on my website. 9617 is the only one of those that is cast in bronze, and it is the most similar to the three I am listing today. They were cast in a mold, but were then carefully finished, even though they are provincial in their sculpting. If you look at them closely, you will notice they are a fascinating combination of early , almost naïve sculpture, combined with careful attentive spiritual art. They may be an early, unique tribal variant ( 1.5"H x 1"W x .75"D ) - 35g / Base: ( 2" W x .75"H ) does not sit flat on its own so I found a temporary base in that allow it to sit evenly. It works for now, though it is not very stable. It could use a better base, though this works for now.
