Large 19thC Lacquer Burmese Mandalay Buddha in exceptional condition. This uncommon type is extremely light weight and is made up primarily of a shell made of a combination of lacquer and ash. It has a thin wood bottom. They are uncommon (authentic ones- there are many on Ebay and elsewhere on the net- I’ve almost never seen one which is authentic) because they are so fragile, and so many have broke over the years- originally this was a common form. Typically this type has damage and repairs, but this one is out of an old US estate and has been in America for a long time. The base looks to have some repainting, and there is some minor repair to the underside of the base He is an excellent size at 18 inches tall by 12.5 inches wide by 7 inches deep. His condition is very good for this extremely fragile type of Buddha. If you are looking for a Buddha of this style, it will be hard to find one of this size and condition for remotely close to this price. He is a delightful and very distinctive face. There are some green bits in the sash of his robe. These tend to be more expensive than their wood counterparts.
