Fine Tang Dynasty Gilt-Bronze Figure of a Bodhisattva (Guanyin), 3.5 Inches

A graceful and early gilt-bronze figure of a Bodhisattva—likely Guanyin—dating to the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Standing 3.5 inches tall and weighing 85 grams, this sensitively cast sculpture displays an elegant, fluid pose with gently swirling drapery and a tall, flame-like headdress rising above the serene face. Unlike many small Tang bronzes of this type, where features are often heavily worn, the facial details here remain clear and well-defined, highlighting the refined craftsmanship of the period.

Traces of rich original gilding remain visible across the surface, adding warmth and depth to the naturally aged bronze. The figure’s silhouette, dynamic movement, and distinctive stylistic elements are characteristic of early Buddhist devotional bronzes from China, and it stands as a particularly charming and expressive example.

With its excellent detail, early form, and unusually well-preserved face, this sculpture represents a fine addition for collectors of early Chinese Buddhist metalwork. A lovely and authentic Tang-period bronze with enduring presence and rarity.
