15/16th century northern Thai or Laos Buddha. Lost to the base, which sometimes occurred during times of scarcity of bronze, especially during times of war. The basis of revered Buddhas were taken and melted down and used to make other Buddhas and to free up other metal for weapons. From what I’ve been told, by many Thai collectors, is that this is not an issue from spiritual point of view as long as the body is still fully intact. This piece has a particularly nice patina, which is close to what is referred to as a Jade patina-the metal has almost turned into stone from the minerals leaching out of the bronze. It is nearly impossible to fake. ( 8"H x 3.5"W x 2"D ) - 1.27lbs. It has a serene, joyful face. A very special finial tops his head. This type of flame is unique to the northern area where Thailand and Laos meet. A 5 foot tall example that was similar to this one, though more complex, was found in the middle of the river just outside the ancient town of. Chan Sieng that was dated to the 15th century.
