Country Group: China, Japan and Korea
Edo or Meiji Beonze Bodhisattva . Marked in faint letters on the underside "Japan". The other two of this type I have seen (and owned) were not marked. I suspect this designation was added in the late 19th when it was imported to the USA when the law was changed, requiring all imports from other countries to say where they came from on the item. A few decades fter this, just after the beginning of the 20th century, the law further developed to require items to also say “made in” right before the country name so it would be clear that the name of the country was written there to indicate the country of origin. Measures 4.25" tall, 1.25" wide, .75" deep.
