Country Group: China, Japan and Korea
I just got this piece back in a trade after having sold it many years ago. It was part of my personal collection for almost 20 years. I bought it originally in the 1980s. I could never find 7 such early Chinese amulets today- especially in such perfect condition. condition. What it is is a lovely, excellent coset of 7 matched and excavated extremely early (Pre-Tang- in the range of FIFTEEN HUNDRED YEARS OLD) Chinese clay/terracotta Bodhisattvas. (Beautifully) framed size is 11.75" x 6.5. Each figure is approximately 1.75" tall. It is rare to find one- almost impossible to find 7 matchings of complete early Chinese Buddhist Amulets of this quality and condition at almost any price these days (At least authentic ones!) that match in a set like this. Almost certainly from an old temple burial site, probably from the early 20th century. They look to have been framed together in the 1950s or '60s when such pieces on the market of this quality were mostly authentic and relatively available as compared to now. Each individual one is worth many hundreds of dollars on its own. A pair is worth at least a 20% premium over 2 single ones. A set of 3 adds even more. A matched set of 7 is unique, and of high value, as there is unlikely a comparable set available for sale anywhere in the world. The frame is high-quality custom, with pieces mounted on hand-loomed Thai silk. Photos were taken with an old camera more than a dozen years ago, so they do not show the same quality and detail as my newest photos.
