These seven framed figures are Japanese dorobutsu (mud Buddhas) , specifically depicting the standing Kannon Bodhisattva. Excavated from the Seikoin Temple in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, these molded clay tablets reliably date to Japan's early Edo period in the 17th century. While their style and vintage mid-century mounting closely resemble older mainland artifacts, these specific votive figures were produced for local temple offerings. Finding seven beautifully preserved pieces mounted together creates a striking visual presentation. (Beautifully) framed size is 11.75" x 6.5. Each figure is approximately 1.75" tall. It is rare to find one of these- almost impossible to find a set of 7 matchings ones in this condition. They look to have been framed together in the 1950s or '60s when such pieces on the market of this quality were. The frame is high-quality custom, with pieces mounted on hand-loomed Thai silk. You can still see the face nicely on at least one of them.. This may be one of the only groupings of its type available on the market.
