This large and impressive carved panel dates to the 18th century and depicts a standing Burmese monk, most likely originally installed as part of a temple wall or architectural setting. The figure is rendered in high relief and set within an elaborately carved frame featuring scrolling foliate motifs, all executed with remarkable precision and depth. While the facial features are more refined and Western in character than typically seen in classic Shan Burmese examples, closely related smaller works with similar framing and design are known, strongly supporting a Burmese origin. It is likely that this piece was created during the colonial period, possibly commissioned for a Western church or patron while retaining its Buddhist identity and devotional intent. The monk’s face conveys sensitivity, calm, and grace, and the flowing robes are carved with a natural rhythm that gives the figure a strong sense of presence and quiet energy. There is some surface cracking and minor loss consistent with age and long-term installation, all clearly visible in the photographs, yet the overall condition remains very good. This is an exceptional and rare example of cross-cultural religious carving, combining Burmese spiritual tradition with Western influence in a way that feels thoughtful, restrained, and deeply compelling.
