This outstanding Sri Lankan bronze Buddha dates to the 19th century and represents one of the finest examples of its type that can be encountered from this period. The figure is seated in serene meditation on a permanently attached base. During the post-Kandy era, it was not uncommon for the Buddha and base to be cast separately and then joined after casting, and the construction here appears consistent with that practice. While the sculpture has substantial weight and presence, it is likely not fully solid cast in the manner of earlier 18th-century and prior Sri Lankan Buddhas.

The beauty of the face is immediately striking, with a calm, luminous expression that conveys deep spiritual composure. The modeling is refined and confident, with a pleasing fullness to the body that enhances the sense of quiet strength and compassion. Sri Lankan bronzes are particularly admired for their post-casting hand work, and this example demonstrates that tradition at its highest level. The crisp detailing throughout, especially in the robe lines, facial features, and hair patterning, reflects an exceptional level of care, time, and technical mastery.

The surface finish is remarkably fine, with subtle transitions and a warm, even tone that speaks to both quality craftsmanship and respectful handling over time. The attention given to every element, including the precise alignment of the hair curls and the carefully articulated garment, places this sculpture well above the vast majority of comparable Sri Lankan Buddhas.

Although an exact date within the century cannot be fixed with certainty, the combination of high-quality casting, refined finishing, and balanced, plump proportions strongly supports a 19th-century attribution. Larger than its height alone suggests, the figure has notable width, depth, and mass, giving it a commanding yet gentle presence. In over three decades of collecting and handling Sri Lankan Buddhist sculpture, this stands as the finest 19th-century example of its type offered.

The Buddha measures approximately 11 inches in height, 9.75 inches in width, and 6 inches in depth.
