19th century Sri Lankan Buddha. Superb example of its type. On a permanently attached base, though in the 19th century, which was post Kandy, the base and the Buddha were sometimes cast separately and attached after casting, as appears was done in this case.. While it has good weight, I do not believe it is fully solid cast as our 18th century and earlier Sri Lankan Buddhas. It is the best example of its type I have ever seen, the beauty in the face is palpable. The quality of the hand work and detail is exceptional. The detail work on most Sri Lankan Buddha is done after casting which gives it a crispness that is rarely seen on other types of Buddha statues. This one is even better than the vast majority of Sri Lankan Buddhas. Great care, time, and attention were taken in every aspect of the detail work. Note how carefully the rose of hair lineup While I can’t date it precisely, the very high quality of the casting, with the pleasing plump shape and the fine finish support a 19th century dating. It is larger than the height suggests due to the roundness of the body and the significant width and depth of the overall figure. He has a good deal of mass to him. The best 19th century Sri Lankan Buddha, I have offered in 30 years.(11"H x 9.75"W x 6"D)-10.6lbs
