vintage/old Chinese bronze censor with separately cast top. The quality of the sculpting, casting and finishing is extremely high. Based on the wear, quality and patina, I was going to initially post this as 19th century. I have, however, encountered to other closely related examples in the past two months that lead me to wonder if this might be a more recent emulation made to look older than it is. If this is so, it is one of the best quality, modern emulations of an earlier style I have ever encountered. Look closely at the details, from the lions as support legs to the Daka (eater of bad dreams) on the top, the quality is extremely high. It would take a large number of hours by a skilled artisan to make such a piece. Additionally, the wear patterns look correct, and as if they were created overtime. And also has a really nice mellow patina that looks like it has developed overtime. Still, after seeing several so closely related, I always get suspicious and usually lower my estimate of potential age and my price to reflect my uncertainty. It may be that they are all correct and that there were a large number of these made in the 19th century. It is a particularly compelling example of very popular image, of a Daka. There are different descriptions of what burning incense or herbs in the base and that allow the smoke to come out through his mouth do. They include eating bad dreams and providing purification.
