This is a large 16–18th century,Tibetan or Mongolian copper repousse monk. Large larger than it’s 14 inch height conveys as it originally on a separately constructed base which would have brought the entire piece up to closer to 2 feet tall, plus the shape of the figure is substantial, with a large head and stout body. The body and arms are done in a copper repousse method. The head appears to be cast bronze or copper, and to be thicker than heavier than the rest of the sculpture. This suggests an earlier dating, perhaps 15/16thC, as this technique was more commonly used during that time. The head has a very distinctive elongated shape that gives the figure of very distinctive look. While he looks unusual, the sculpture managed to make him very attractive and appealing. He has a gentleness and sense of equanimity and joy that is palpable and which makes this statue exceptional. When people look at him, they smile and are drawn to him. His look is unique, not only is his head and unusual shape, his body is very round, and his head is a bit large for the size of his body. His overall appearance works really well. He benefits from. Having a shim or other object place under the left under side in order to help him evenly. He is structurally, stable and sound.( 14"H x 13"W x 7.5"D ) - 5lbs . It has an old collection number attached to the lower inside wall of the underside.
