This antique Chinese bronze Hotai, also known as the Happy Buddha, is a highly unusual and cleverly designed devotional figure. Unlike most examples, this piece is hollow and constructed with an open mouth so it can be placed over an incense burner, allowing the rising smoke to pass through the interior and emerge visibly from the figure’s mouth.

The result is both theatrical and symbolic, giving the sculpture a living presence when in use. This functional design is rarely encountered and sets this example apart from typical Hotai figures.

The casting has a distinctive character, with strong modeling in the face and hands, and a surface that shows good age and handling. The expression, posture, and overall feel of the piece give it a personality unlike others of its type.

Dating to 100 years old or more, this is a rare combination of sculpture and ritual function, making it both a decorative and experiential object rooted in traditional incense practice.
