Country Group:
15thC northern Thai Buddha in a beautiful folk style, with a remarkable base and a very distinctive face and head. The base has beautiful floral elements cast into it. I've seen a number of other northern Thai Buddhist with floral elements, none prettier than these. The head and face are unique, with a tiny little ears that at first I thought were broken, but if you look at them closely, I think they were made deliberately to look like this. The head almost looks like it could have come from a Lao Buddha (and the finial on top of the head looks very much Lao), but the casting technique and the style of the base appear to be more Thai. In reality, up until the mid 19th century they were one country, or a number of separate kingdoms depending on how you look at it, so trying to make this distinction from our vantage point in 2026 is a bit of a waste of time. If I had to come up with one word to describe this Buddha it would be charming. Larger than its height conveys due to the broad base and the large head and very small finial( 10.75"H x 7"W x 4.5"D )- 7.40lbs
