Compelling 15-17th century northern Thai or Laos Buddha. Large and extremely heavy for size at 16.5"H x 11.25"W x 8"D and an impressive 32lbs. He has an extremely distinctive face that looks like no other Buddha I have ever seen, and I have looked at hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. His face is animated and expressive and almost alive. He has pursed lips and funny proportions, and a mottled surface which is not bronze disease, but it is not a refined patina-I think someone has tried to clean him in an awkward way in order to get the best and clearest version they could of his face and body. He appears to have originally had inlaid eyes. He was made by someone who was deeply involved in their craft and in their practice of their religion, but was not a classically trained sculptor. He has one of the tiniest fins on the top of his head for a large Buddha that I have ever seen. His face is almost heart shaped. You can feel his personality when you sit with this Buddha. There’s something compelling about his expression and his energy as he is so idiosyncratic . I could try and describe it, but the best thing to do is to look closely at the photos, especially of the face and overall figure. For international buyers, this will cost a bit to ship due to the size and weight, but his price is quite reasonable for such a substantial Buddha of significant age and such individuality. He is truly a one of a kind, you will never find another, quite like him.
