This is a remarkable piece of history. A 17th century crucifix with a Buddha in the center. Given out to Japanese converts by the Portuguese missionaries in the 1600’s to display to show the shotguns that they still honored the elders and their culture, even though they had converted to Christianity. I’ve seen a number of these over the years, some out of bronze like this one and some out of iron. This one does not have the dark patina of many. I don’t know if it is because of the kind of alloy used or because it may have been cleaned. It had significant wear, but it shows beautifully. ( 9"H x 7"W x .5"D ) 340g
