Extraordinary Thai bronze fasting bronze Buddha. This piece is incredibly sculpted cast, and finished to a very high standard. There were a number of these made in Thailand in the Rattanakosin (late 18th to 19th century) period of this type that I have seen through the years. This is by far the finest and largest I have seen outside a temple in Thailand. The detail work and casting and finishing our astonishing in their quality and beauty. This subject can sometimes verge on being gruesome or oppressive, but this Buddha is joyful and fully present. He presents as being in deep meditation and also fully present. He almost seems amuse. The most remarkable thing about him is the phenomenal detail in the bones and veins and other details of his emaciated body. The sculpture is a tour de force of beautiful careful sculpting that had to be meticulously planned and worked out to the smallest detail in order for everything to come together so perfectly. It is also finished so probably, as everything is perfectly smooth and even and almost mirror like in quality. The surface has a nice dark complex color to it that shows the effects of time and handling and light appropriate cleaning. This only adds to its beauty. The last Buddha I had like this had a similar face and related details, but it was smaller and did not have the charisma of this one. While they were very close, the large size, the fine casting and finishing of the extraordinary sculpting along with the very good care. This Buddha has had, gives this one a much stronger impact. Spend time with the photos. Blow them up as much as you can, and look at the details and then imagine the Buddha at full size, with the monks embedded in the base. It is a very special example of its type in a large size.
