Edo Japanese Buddha/Monk carved out of bone. I purchased a lifetime collection of small stone Buddhist sculptures Were purchased through the sun of a Japanese gentleman who had collected these In Japan throughout his collecting career. Mixed into the collection were three examples that were carved out of bone. The three seemed to be related to each other, and were probably carved by the same hand, and possibly out of the same bone. The three bone examples appeared closely related to the stone examples and appeared to be from the same time and place in Japan.. It’s surprising that in my 40+ year collecting and 35 year selling career that I’ve not come across one of these before. This means that they are likely rare or at least very uncommon and possibly from a small geographic area. They were described to me as being from the.Edo period (1603-1868) , and based on the style of the figures and the amount of where they display. I believe these bone examples, are probably from the later Edo period, probably from the early 19thC. I’m posting more than half of them right now, so you can get sense of them side-by-side as it helps to see them together. The others will not be put up for sale for sometime as I have them on my own home altar and plan to keep them for some time before putting them up for sale.
This Buddha is extremely animated and exhibits great personality and charisma. I’m unsure if it’s the medium, he carved out of or the skill of the sculptor, but he has a feeling of almost being alive that is qualitatively different than the rest of the group. He is a personal favorite.
