Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)

Item id: 1114

This is an 18th century Brass or Bronze alloy of “Amateyus”, or Bodhisattva of Long Life. He is either from Tibet or Mongolia. His form is classic 18th century Tibet. The reason I think that he may be from Mongolia is because while Mongolian tended to closely follow their Tibetan counterparts, they sometimes used unconventional alloys and casting techniques. They also seemed to have a special feel to the expressiveness to the face which was different from Tibetan examples. This piece is fascinating in that it is both refined and provincial at the same time. When you look closely, the surface is not smooth, and there are some casting flaws, as can be seen in the photos. At the same time, when you step back and look at the overall figure, it is a remarkably successful and beautiful sculpture, with fine form and balance. There is oxidation as seen in the photos, which adds to his complexity and shows his 200+ year age. He was never gilded. He has a superb face, and a gentle, loving presence typically found only in high quality sculpture. . Sits 6 and 7/8 inches tall. Lovely!
