Item id: 1133

Extremely rare 13th century Bayon period “Saenkajai”, sometimes referred to has a Happy Buddha. Superb face, with a Khmer face which radiates calm and peace. He is made of sandstone, and is in excellent condition with a great patina. He is actually not a Buddha, but a monk who made himself fat so he would not be confused with the Buddha. He is very popular in Thailand and Laos for protection, good luck, and prosperity. This is probably the very earliest of all Thai representations of this figure. It is extremely rare. Note the fine detail incised work on the back. Also, traces of original design work in black. Guaranteed authentic- no doubt on this one. Sits 7.5 inches tall. 6.25 without the base.
