Powerful and almost haunting large and early Fang Buddha head from Northern Thailand. It appears to be mostly solid cast and is quite heavy for its size. There are remains of the original inlaid eyes, which probably were mother of pearly and likely contained gemstones for pupils. Fang was an early kingdom near what is now the northern Thai/Burmese border. Their Buddhas are known for distinctively long faces and necks, and for a very unique look to the face. The earliest (of which this is one) go back to the 14th century. The patina is a blackish green- it is absolutely original to the piece. I’ve never had another quite like this- it is quite rare. It sits 4.25 inches tall, and almost 6.5 inches including the base. Losses as seen in the photos. A true collector’s piece.
