An extraordinary pair of large, very finely cast 14/15th century hands and forearms of a standing Thai bronze Utong Buddha. These are some of the finest of their type I have ever seen, and almost certainly the best pair of Thai Buddha hand/forearms I have seen for sale. - The actual Buddha would have been a masterpiece worth many tens of thousands of dollars and standing near life size. The almost human shaped hands (not elongated, but shorter gently rounded fingers) along with the alloy, dark jade green patina, and robe style all suggest a very early date. They look to be Utong, or very early Ayuthaya, with a likely dating of 15th century, and possibly earlier. It is unlikely that they are later. They mounting were professionally done 30 or 40 years ago in a way I have not seen before- it displays them effectively, and makes them great to show. I’ve had them on either side of a large Buddha, to dramatic effect. Each is 13.5 inches tall from the ground to the top of the finger tips as they are mounted now. From the fingertip to the crotch of the mounting (the closest you can get to the other end, which is hidden in the wood) it is 13 inches- the actual length is probably 14 or more inches. The palms alone are close to 6 inches long. They are extremely heavy. Together they weigh 19 pounds including the bases- my guess is that at least 15 to16 pounds of that is the hands/forearms themselves. The patina is untouched- They are a deep green which remains of white. They are a powerful, beautiful, and fine pair.
