This auction is for a very uncommon and authentic 15/16thC Buddha from Burma. It is a quite uncommon standing Buddha. It was solid cast in 2 parts: this is the top half, which is separated from the bottom but not broken. It was solid cast in an early casting style. The piece has one very short arm and the other is holding something I cannot identify. The face and head have features associated with early Shan style Buddhas, but it also has remnants of earlier styles (such as the way the finial is set far back on the head like on Pagan Buddhas. The patina is fantastic, with traces of gilding and lacquer mixed with a smooth, dark and shiny surface. It is darker than the photos: I had to lighten them a bit to allow the piece to be properly viewed. While it appears to have had centuries of burial, the expressiveness and character come through well. Often just the heads of this quality sell for more than I am asking for this entire piece. It stands 5 and 7/8 inches high, 8 inches with the custom lucite base. This is a collector's piece
