TRAVELING SHRINE
18th - 19th Century Tibet
Wood & Copper, 11-1/2 Inches Square
Remarkable and complex travelling shrine-copper over wood with hardstones (some missing). Opens in 2 different directions- one gives a large copper over wood surface, the other opens to an ancient, worn Thangka with the inside of the box and a shelf. The bottom has a double dorje. There is a lot going on- flowers, fierce deities, human and skeleton faces, Buddhas, cow heads, and miscilaneous designs. A unique, well used ritual item unlike any other I have seen. Spend time looking at the photos- you will continue to see more detail as you look at it.
