Very rare Northern Thai Bodhisattva of Compassion. Bodhisattvas are rarely depicted in Theravaden Buddhist Countries. The base, face, casting technique and back of crown all strongly point to 16th century Northern Thailand or Yunnan China. The top of the crown (or hat) looks to be from the far south of China (Yunnan). The detail on the surface of the figure is very uncommon. Many of the people in Yunnan are ethnically related to the Northern Thai people, and 400+ years ago the borders were more porous. I believe this piece was sculpted in in an area where the 2 cultures crossed paths. I've seen a few other examples over the past 25 years-none as large or fine as this one. Large 15.75" tall, 10" wide, 5" deep. Buddhas on front and rear of hat (signifying him as the Bodhisattva ofCompassion) are still visible.
