Serene, powerful 13thC Khmer stone head. 99% of this type (especially in this size) are later emulations. This is the real deal. Appears to have been through a fire long ago. Life size at 10.5" tall, and sits on a base that is 5.5" tall, 7" square on bottom. Deaccessioned by a California Museum-note the museum numbers on the small piece of wood sticking out of the bottom of the neck (in photo with head removed from base). They indicate that it went in to the Museum inventory in 1984.
The face is an idealized depiction of Javerman, the last great King of the Khmer Empire. Very special piece with great beauty and presence.
