Country Group: China, Japan and Korea
I have had this piece for a very long time and had no idea what it was. I then purchased the book "Transmitting the Forms of Divinity, Early Buddhist Art from Korea and Japan" put out by the Japan Society in 2003. It contains a 7/8thC bronze cast dead ringer for this piece on the cover. The text describes ""similar Chinese and Japanese triad plaques were produced by hammering a sheet of bronze against a mold" - it is possible that this one is one of the early hammered examples, though this type has been emulated all through the ages. It measures 11.5" tall, 8.5" wide and nestles into a base that is 1.75" tall, 2" deep and 12.25" wide.
