This is a very uncommon and early Buddha: it has many features of Laos Buddhas, although I believe it is from Fang, in the far north of Thailand. This area has it's own local style of Buddhist art that goes back to the 14th century. The very distinctive and large cupped hand, as well as the distinctive face and long neck look quite related to other early Fang Buddhas I have seen. It is a very good size at 12 and 1/4 inches high and 6.5 inches wide at the base, and it is quite heavy. It is in very good condition for a Buddha of this type. There is a cast-on repair to the front of the base that appears to be part of the original manufacture. No losses or damage. The gilding on the face and chest are recent, and have been put on as an act of devotion in Thai style. The eyes were originally inlaid. This piece has the quality of good folk art; it is both simple, and at the same time has an undefinable depth.12.25" tall, bottom measures 6 3/8" x 4./5". Very serene!
